Georgia Aquarium

In the center of downtown Atlanta, a shimmering blue world pulses with life. The Georgia Aquarium is one of the most captivating destinations in the Southeast, and arguably one of the greatest aquariums in the world. From the moment visitors enter its glass-fronted facade on Baker Street, they are swept into an aquatic realm alive with motion, color, and mystery. This is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, home to thousands of marine animals that glide, dance, and dazzle in carefully crafted habitats.

1. A World-Class Marine Encounter

The Georgia Aquarium holds more than 70 habitats and is home to species that range from sleek sea lions and playful penguins to the immense whale shark, the largest fish in the ocean. The exhibits unfold like a journey across the globe’s waters, from tropical reefs to icy arctic corners.

One of the most celebrated features is the Ocean Voyager exhibit. Built by The Home Depot, this exhibit includes a massive acrylic tunnel with a slow-moving walkway. Visitors pass under the swimming patterns of whale sharks, manta rays, and schools of glimmering fish, surrounded by 6.3 million gallons of salt water. The sensation of standing beneath a whale shark as it glides above is unforgettable.

Another crowd favorite, Cold Water Quest, brings visitors face-to-face with beluga whales, sea otters, and cold-dwelling penguins. The belugas, known for their expressive faces and gentle demeanor, often draw large crowds during feeding times and interactive moments.

In the Tropical Diver gallery, tanks flash with coral colors and darting reef fish. Live coral grows beneath carefully tuned lights, and the gentle sway of sea anemones adds an ethereal beauty to the space. The Sharks! Predators of the Deep exhibit features hammerheads, tiger sharks, and a theater-like atmosphere that heightens the thrill of being near these apex predators.
